Building Inspections & Permits
Notice: Building permits will no longer be issued on the same day.
Structural plan reviews required on commercial & residential permit applications.
Items listed below are needed to obtain a building permit.
- Fully completed permit application (Application available on-line and at the annex at 1601 N. Columbia St, Suite 200.)
- Driveway permit ($35.00, Can be applied for in the Planning & Development office.)
- 2 physical copies OR 1 electronic copy of house plans (Elevations & floor plan)
- Copy of plat showing footprint of structure and front, rear, and side yard setback distances. (Available in the Clerk’s Office at 121 N. Wilkinson St, Suite 209)
- Septic approval from Health Department (Located at 100 Ireland Dr, Milledgeville, GA 31061)
- Permits must be issued before starting the construction, alteration, or moving of any structure, as well as changing the use of buildings, structure, or land (except changes in agricultural crops).
- The homeowner will only be allowed to purchase the electrical, plumbing, and mechanical permits when they are performing actually said work (must meet with the Building Official before permits can be issued to homeowners). Permits are required for any work valued at over $1,000 or when an inspection is required.
- The Department requires 24 to 48 hours for the inspector to complete the inspection.
- You must call the Building Department and request an inspection. The inspection will be scheduled as soon as possible. The inspector will need to inspect the footings, slab, rough-in final before the power can be released. If everything is complete, we will contact the power company and issue a CO (Certificate of Occupancy).
